Closet Transformation – Featuring the Symphony Wall Organizer

@InteriorDesignerella x Tailored Living x Simple Organization x Shannon Weller Designs

After over 5 years in their home Jen Adams (@interiordesignerella) and her husband decided it was time to update their master suite. This included Jen’s closet, which would also act as her workspace. Being a fashion and lifestyle blogger, Jen required a space to layout and plan her outfits as well as a functioning system which would help her maintain an organized closet in the long term.

Her closet offered great space but as Jen describes it, it is an “awkward L-shape” which creates some design and storage problems. Although the existing design had built-in units, it did not include any systems that would allow for categorical organization. The dark coloured cabinetry in the L-shaped closet also made it feel smaller and dated, much in need of an update. To help her design the most efficient space Jen recruited Tailored Living of North County, Interior Designer: Shannon Weller Design, and Professional Organizer: Simple Organization – they worked collaboratively to provide Jen with the boutique style closet she desired.

The Design

A large part of the design focused on how to create a “working closet” for Jen while maintaining a boutique feel. Her closet needed to be a place where she could create content for Instagram and her Blog, while still providing a space to store and organize her belongings. This meant the flow and placement of items should serve a functional and aesthetic need.

After clearing out the existing closet and measuring the space, Dana Nuesca of Tailored Living North County was able to render a design for Jen that would maximize the space and make use of the L-shape layout. Working together with Jen, Dana chose TAG Hardware products as she prefers its “modern flair” and wide range of coordinating products.

The products incorporated in the design were:

Each wall and section in the closet was given a designated purpose to function to its full potential. As you walk through the door there is a tall section of shoe shelves on the left, accented with TAG Hardware Elite fences. The angled shelves allow the shoes to be seen without having to take them off the shelf, and the Elite Shoe Fences prevent the shoes from slipping while at the same time adding a finishing touch to the space.

The Symphony Wall Organizer

“Real life mood board, to style outfits, and store everyday items that don’t need to take up shelf space. ”

On the opposite wall, which would be behind the door when open, is the Symphony Wall Organizer. Jen uses the Symphony Wall Organizer as her “real life mood board, to style outfits, and store everyday items that don’t need to take up shelf space. The hooks are moveable and can be placed to wherever they work best for you!”

Symphony offers an alternative to traditional wall hooks. Triple Hooks on the Symphony organizer are ideal for hanging smaller accessories in the closet such as necklaces and belts, and the Coat Hook is great for hanging your most commonly used coats, bags, and hats!  Of course, Shoe hooks are great for shoes.  (On a side note, the Symphony Shoe and Triple hooks were recently updated and now incorporate an easy to remove tab which unlocks the hook and allows you to move it to a new location without tools.  Additionally, the Shoe Hook was updated to allow for the storage of both large and small shoes with one size of hook for better flexibility in storage options. More details coming next week, make sure you’re signed up for updates!)

Storage on the Symphony Wall Organizer goes beyond the hooks. The horizontal vegan leather bars can be used to hang scarves, bracelets, and even sunglasses. “The white and gold finish is luxurious and sophisticated,” setting the tone for Jen’s closet as you enter the space.

Protruding only 2 ¾”, the Symphony Wall Organizer creates hanging storage in tight spaces like narrow walkways and behind doors. Jen’s closet posed this exact scenario, and so the Symphony Wall Organizer became the perfect solution.

The shoe wall and Symphony Wall Organizer on opposing walls also add a design feature in itself. The horizontal lines of the shoe fence and the horizontal bars of the wall organizer create symmetry, and the wall paper that Shannon chose adds interest and contrasts against the lines.

The “Cloffice”

The next zone in the closet is the corner space. This is where Jen creates content for her social media outlets, so the space needed to have space for her to move around as well as offer an attractive backdrop. Dana, Tammy, and Shannon worked together to achieve this with their combined expertise. Dana designed a built-in dresser unit with floating shelves above, and display units on either side. These displays were enhanced with the incorporation of integrated LED lights from Tailored Living in the closet system, creating a spotlight in this boutique style closet. Tammy of Simple Organization used this space to showcase Jen’s favourite accessories, which stand out against the wallpaper Shannon chose for the closet. As a completed unit this section provides Jen a beautiful boutique-like backdrop for photos and videos.

Coordinated Storage Systems

As you turn the corner into the main area of the closet that is where Jen’s clothing is stored. In this section Dana incorporates a variety of TAG Hardware essential closet accessories in Matte Gold to coordinate the design and enhance storage. Jen describes TAG’s Matte Gold finish as “a gorgeous finish that works well for a neutral elegant look!”

The understated Signature Poles were chosen for the hanging sections, which coordinate with the reeded look on the Elite Shoe Fences. This creates unity and coordination in the design.

One of Jen’s daily tasks involves creating inspiration outfits for her followers. To make this easier, Dana added an Elite Valet Rack in one of the tall hanging sections. This has become one of Jen’s favourite accessories in the closet. “[The Valet Rack] makes styling outfits easy, is the perfect place to hang garments to dry, or to temporarily store clothing that are in transit – for me that’s doing photoshoots, but it’s also perfect for when packing for a trip or comparing items that you just need a place to hang and see!!”

Further down in this section is an Elite Belt Rack, where Jen hangs her most used belts. Hanging the belts help keep their shape and keep them within sight when planning an outfit.

This side of the closet also has a place for laundry. There are two Tilt Out Hampers concealed under a display section, these were perfect for Jen as she wanted a clean look.

“There are two tilt [out] hampers with removable laundry bags that are easy to put in and take out!”

On the opposite, shorter, wall there is additional hanging space, which is divided into two sections by an enclosed hanging space. Dana created this enclosed section to provide a designated space for Jen’s occasional wear. The open hanging sections on either side are double hanging sections. One side is used for hanging clothing, while Tammy has utilized the bottom section on the other side for hanging Jen’s tall boots. “Having these custom bays to hang my boots in has been a game changer!!! Not only does it save space, but it also looks nice and keeps my boots in great shape!”

In the end, Jen’s awkward L-shaped closet was transformed to meet all her needs. It now flows consistently with how she would plan her daily outfit. At the far end of the closet Jen keeps her clothing and as she makes her way out, she is able to pick out her accessories and shoes. Dana, Tammy, and Shannon designed Jen’s closet specifically to her needs, leaving her with space to add and adjust as she needs. Meticulous planning combined with smart storage accessories converted Jen’s closet from a messy storage space to a functional, working closet.
